Female Rap Pioneers Sit Down With the MadMen to Discuss How the Image of Women in Hip-Hop went From Queen To Hoodrat

On Tuesday, July 31st, the MadMen welcome the female pioneers of rap to debate what happened to the female image in hip-hop.  How did we go from Queens to Hoodrats?

Yo-Yo is a Grammy-nominated American hardcore rapper and actress. Much of her music has advocated female empowerment, denouncing the frequent sexism found in hip-hop music. She is the protégé of gangsta rapper Ice Cube.

Sha-Rock : is the FIRST Female luminary MC to be apart of an all male Hip Hop group. Also known as the Mother of the Mic. She became the first female emcee to join an all male hip-hop group – Original Funky Four. She was not looked at as a sex object, but rather she was just another member of the group. Sha Rock is the first Female MC to have a record deal world wide, and to be featured on national TV (Saturday Night Live).

Simone Greene : One of hip-hop’s most respected photographers, Simone Green was right in the thick of things during Death Row’s 90s dominance. Along with being behind some of the most memorable images of that era, she’s recently released her book Time Served: My Days and Nights on Death Row Records.

Nikki D was the first female rapper signed by Def Jam, and was also the vice president of A&R at Flavor Unit records. She is a very outspoken opponent of the current sexualized image of women in Hip-Hop today.

Lil Nat : For over a decade she has been a major part of popular radio, working behind the scenes at 98.7 KISS FM as well as the Commercial Production Director for 8 years, as well as an on air personality for sister station HOT 97 in NYC.

Roxanne Shante’ wowed the world at 14 when she joined forces with Marley Marl and DJ Mr. Magic to record a diss/response record to UTFO’s Roxanne, Roxanne.  Bringing the voice  of the female MC to superstar status. She is also a founding member of the Juice Crew.

Sheri Sher is a founding member of the now-legendary Mercedes Ladies, the first all-female MC and DJ crew in the history of hip hop. The Mercedes Ladies performed alongside living legends like DJ Kool Herc, Grandmaster Flash, Afrika Bambaataa, Dr. Jeckyl & Mr. Hyde, The Cold Crush Brothers, Grand Wizard Theodore, The Funky 4+1, and the list goes on.  She is an author, and penned a novel based on her experiences, called Mercedes Ladies trough Vibe Publishing.
