UPDATE: On Nov 12th Jay-Z and Rocawear decided to pull the “occupy All Streets” T-shirt of the shelves due to the backlash from MadMen all over. A true example of what happens when people use their voice to effect change. We are proud to have contributed to this … Rock on Madan! #occupyRocaWear
in today’s “GTFOHWTBS” news…
Jay-Z has decided to flex his elitist muscles. He is the latest celebrity to try to receive headlines on the backs of the 99%. But he has now gone a step further…now he is capitalizing on it.
The self proclaimed hustler has created a line of t-shirts that boldly state “Occupy All Streets”…catchy …and maybe would be a smart move..if he was ACTUALLY HELPING the 99% he is exploiting. As of today, Business Insider and The Huffington Post are reporting that none of the proceeds from the clothing line will go towards providing better tents for the occupiers, food contributions, blankets or anything that could REALLY help.
Here is a statement released by RocaWear when questioned: The ‘Occupy All Streets’ T shirt was created in support of the ‘Occupy Wall Street’ movement. Rocawear strongly encourages all forms of constructive expression, whether it be artistic, political or social. ‘Occupy All Streets’ is our way of reminding people that there is change to be made everywhere, not just on Wall Street. At this time we have not made an official commitment to monetarily support the movement.”
We know Jay sold the company.. but he DOES have the power to say “I’m not rocking that unless some of the proceeds go to the movement!” How quickly he forgets that a few short years ago, he WAS the 99% with 99 problems, trying to make a dollar outta 15 cents like the rest of us. What makes this even worse it s that a TRUE hustler would know that they would at least have to throw their mark a bone. Hell, even Russell Simmons offered to pay to have the park cleaned so the protestors could stay. We know he wouldn’t have actually cut a check…but at least he offered and actually spent a significant amount of days on site.
And yes, there are other people capitalizing on the movement and trying to commercialize it (MTV is trying to make a reality series out of it)- effectively taking away from the seriousness of the matter. But we NEVER expected it from one of our own. Or should we have?
While Jay won’t give monetary assistance to the movement he is capitalizing on, he does give them a big thumbs up, saying he supports their efforts to effect change.
I say F you Jay-Z! All the power and influence you have and this is how you choose to represent? This is why we will NEVER get anywhere as a people. I’m not talking about just Black people…but ALL people. People whose lives have been ruined by the greed-mongering of Wall Street, who are losing thier homes, who got laid-off due to corporate raiding, those who lost their retirement pensions who take this matter as life and death…because for them it is. It is not a fad or a trend, it is real life.
We really hope you will address this and make sure you actually do something with the wealth the 99% have afforded you. Note this as The MadMan adding a voice to the many others that are offended by this move. Cause WE have 99 problems..and you ARE one.
